Sealants

Dental sealants are protective coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of our teeth. The most common locations to place sealants are on the back teeth (molars). Many people have deep, narrow grooves in their teeth that can be prone to trapping plaque and bacteria that lead to decay. These grooves are also known as pits and fissures and are so tiny that not even a single toothbrush bristle can fit into the groove to clean out the debris and plaque that accumulate there. When a dental sealant is applied to these pits and fissures, the sealant acts as a protective, physical barrier to prevent decay. As long as the sealant stays intact, plaque, food particles, and bacteria cannot penetrate through the sealant.

The ideal time to place sealants is from ages 6 to 15, during a time when decay is most common for children and the back teeth begin to erupt into the mouth. Sealants are not always beneficial for every patient, especially if a patient does not have deep pits and grooves. The primary purpose of placing sealants is to prevent decay on the most cavity-prone areas on the teeth, thus preventing the more invasive dental fillings from having to be placed in the future. Dental sealants are typically placed on just the back teeth (molars), but some people may benefit from sealants placed on other teeth with deep pits and fissures as well. The process for placing a sealant is simple and does not require much time. Sealants also do not require anesthetic—so no shots are necessary! If you have a child between the age of 6 and 15, or if you’ve been told you have “deep grooves” in your back teeth, see if Dr. Street would determine that those teeth would benefit from a sealant!
